Chapter 14 - The Custody Petition
Daniel’s draft custody petition was already complete.
It described Claire as emotionally unstable, obsessive and unable to bond with her baby.
It claimed Daniel had served as her primary caregiver throughout pregnancy.
It included Dr. Sloan’s unsigned medical statement and the forged maternity leave declaration.
The petition was dated for the day after Noah’s birth.
Daniel had planned to file it while Claire remained hospitalized.
If granted, he could take Noah from the hospital and place him in another home before Claire was physically able to follow.
Claire’s arms tightened around her son.
“You were going to take him.”
“Temporarily.”
“Where?”
Daniel did not answer.
Tessa did.
“To Rachel’s house.”
Claire looked at him.
“You planned to bring my newborn into the home you bought for a woman I didn’t know existed?”
“I was creating stability.”
“For whom?”
“For my children.”
The words struck Claire harder than his shouting.
He had referred to Noah as his child while treating Claire as nothing more than the body that delivered him.
He wanted the baby.
Not because he was ready to care for Noah.
Because custody would give him leverage over Claire’s company shares.
Under the Haven House trust, a guardian caring for Claire’s minor child could petition for limited financial oversight if Claire were declared incapacitated.
Daniel planned to use Noah as a second path to Haven House.
If Claire refused to sign, he would claim she was unfit.
If the independent trust blocked him, he would seek authority through the baby.
Margaret had protected the company.
But even she had not imagined Daniel would use a newborn as a financial instrument.
Tessa contacted the hospital’s legal department.
A protective alert was placed on Noah’s chart.
He could not leave with anyone except Claire or a person she authorized.
Daniel’s parental rights were not removed, but he could not take the baby while an emergency safety review was underway.
Daniel looked toward Claire.
“You’re turning my son against me before he can even open his eyes.”
“Noah is hours old.”
“Exactly. He needs his father.”
“He needed you ten minutes ago.”
Daniel had no answer.
The state investigator arrived and asked him to surrender his company laptop.
Sabrina was being questioned in another location.
Northline’s owner had already requested immunity.
Daniel’s network was collapsing faster than he could control it.
As the investigator led him toward the door, Daniel turned back.
“Claire, don’t do this.”
She looked at the man who had ignored her fear, abandoned her beside their crying child and prepared to remove Noah from her hospital room.
“I didn’t.”
