Chapter 17 - Sabrina’s Agreement
Sabrina requested a meeting with prosecutors.
Daniel had told her Claire would voluntarily step away after Noah’s birth.
He claimed the financial transfers were temporary and would be replaced after the Margaret House sale.
Sabrina knew invoices were false.
She knew charity restrictions were being removed dishonestly.
She also knew Daniel was married.
She was not innocent.
But she had not known about Rachel, Lily, the custody petition or the life insurance change.
When investigators showed her the evidence, she understood Daniel planned to sacrifice her if the scheme failed.
A draft statement on his laptop blamed Sabrina for every unauthorized payment.
Daniel intended to describe himself as an executive deceived by a dishonest subordinate.
Sabrina surrendered the original Northline records.
She also provided recordings of Daniel discussing Claire.
On one recording, he said:
“After surgery, she’ll be exhausted, medicated and emotional. She’ll sign anything if I tell her it keeps Noah safe.”
On another:
“If she refuses, we use Sloan’s letter and take temporary custody. She won’t be able to fight from a hospital bed.”
The recordings destroyed his claim that the transfer was a misunderstanding.
Daniel was charged with conspiracy, wire fraud, embezzlement, forgery, insurance fraud and attempted custodial interference.
Dr. Sloan lost his medical license after admitting he agreed to sign an incapacity statement without examining Claire.
Aaron Price pleaded guilty to operating Northline as a shell vendor.
Sabrina accepted responsibility and received a prison sentence under a cooperation agreement.
Rachel was not charged.
Investigators determined she genuinely believed Daniel’s payments were legitimate income. She returned the house purchased with stolen money and helped create a protected account for Lily using Daniel’s remaining lawful assets.
Claire asked Tessa whether Noah and Lily should ever meet.
“Not now,” Tessa said. “But one day, if both children want it, they deserve the truth without carrying Daniel’s shame.”
Claire agreed.
Lily was not responsible for her father’s lies.
Neither was Noah.
Daniel’s crimes had connected their lives.
Claire refused to let his cruelty define how the children viewed each other.
After six days, Claire was discharged from the hospital.
Emily helped place Noah inside the car seat.
Daniel was not there.
For the first time, Claire did not experience his absence as abandonment.
