Chapter 6 - The Signature Practice
Daniel became kinder as Claire’s due date approached.
He cooked breakfast.
He attended appointments.
He told friends he had reduced his work schedule to support his wife.
In private, he kept documents near her whenever she was tired.
One night, after Claire took prescribed medication for nausea, he placed a tablet in her hand.
“Insurance update,” he said.
The screen showed only the final signature box.
Claire pretended to struggle to focus.
“Send it to Tessa.”
“It expires tonight.”
“Then it expires.”
Daniel removed the tablet.
His voice remained gentle.
“You don’t trust me anymore.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“I’m tired.”
He waited until her breathing slowed.
Then he used her finger to unlock the tablet.
Claire remained still.
Through barely opened eyes, she watched him photograph her signature from an old document.
The next morning, Maya found three new files created under Claire’s account.
A maternity leave declaration.
An executive authority transfer.
And a draft board resolution describing Claire as medically impaired.
Her signature had been copied onto each one.
Daniel planned to claim she signed them willingly.
Tessa advised Claire to move out immediately.
But Daniel had already instructed household staff that Claire was not permitted to drive.
He monitored the cars.
He checked her phone.
He even called her obstetrician to ask whether “confusion” could be part of pregnancy-related hypertension.
The doctor refused to discuss Claire’s health without permission.
Daniel called another physician.
Dr. Peter Sloan operated a private wellness clinic used by Haven House executives.
He had never examined Claire.
Yet Maya discovered a draft letter under his name stating that Claire lacked the capacity to make complex financial decisions.
The letter was scheduled to be signed after delivery.
“He’s preparing a medical justification,” Tessa said.
Claire felt Noah move.
“Can he take my child?”
“Not based on this alone.”
“Could he try?”
Tessa did not answer quickly enough.
Daniel could argue that Claire’s supposed mental instability endangered Noah.
If he became the child’s primary caregiver while Claire remained hospitalized, he could create the appearance that he was the stable parent.
Claire understood why he had begun telling everyone she was emotional.
He wanted control of the company.
But he also wanted leverage over her son.
She opened the black folder and added the forged declarations.
“I won’t let him use Noah.”
Tessa’s voice became firm.
“Then you need a safe person present from the moment labor begins.”
Claire chose Emily Park, the nurse who had first reported the canceled patient visits.
Emily agreed without hesitation.
Daniel believed Claire’s support system had disappeared.
