Chapter 10 - You Had Him

Daniel paced beside the hospital window.
“Why hasn’t she signed?” Sabrina demanded through his phone.
Claire could hear her from the bed.
Daniel turned away.
“She will.”
“The developer’s attorneys are waiting.”
“I said I’ll handle it.”
Noah cried louder.
Daniel ended the call and glared toward the bed.
“Can you make him stop?”
Claire stared at him.
“He’s a few hours old.”
“Then feed him.”
“I’m trying.”
Her hands shook as she adjusted the blanket. Her body felt heavy and unfamiliar. She needed help sitting upright, but Daniel did not move.
“I asked you to call the nurse.”
“You have a button.”
“I needed you.”
Daniel stepped closer.
His face was inches from hers.
“You had him. You take care of him.”
The monitor lights blinked behind the bed.
Noah startled at the sound of his father’s voice.
Claire wrapped both arms around him.
Something changed inside her.
Not suddenly.
Not dramatically.
It was quieter than that.
The final piece of hope she had protected for years simply disappeared.
Daniel reached for the transfer document.
“Sign it.”
Claire’s hand slid into the hospital bag.
Her fingers touched the black folder.
Daniel noticed.
“What is that?”
Claire removed it slowly.
She opened the first page.
Northline payments.
The second.
The forged medical declaration.
The third.
The Margaret House sale.
Daniel’s expression shifted from irritation to fear.
“Where did you get those?”
“I kept records.”
She photographed the pages and sent them to Tessa.
In the hallway, Tessa received the message beside the elevator.
She saw Noah’s birth registration, the forged documents and the closing deadline.
She immediately called the bank’s fraud division.
Then she contacted the board’s independent officers.
“Activate the protective governance clause.”
Her next call went to hospital security.
“Daniel Lawson is in Room 614. Do not let him leave with any documents or electronic devices belonging to Haven House.”
Inside the room, Daniel’s phone began vibrating.
He glanced at the screen.
Northline Advisory account restricted.
Another alert appeared.
Margaret House closing suspended.
Then another.
Executive credentials revoked pending investigation.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What did you do?”
“I protected what you were trying to steal.”
Two security officers appeared outside the door.
Tessa stepped between them.
“Daniel, put the folder down.”
He turned toward the bathroom as though searching for another exit.

There was none.
👉 The account freeze stopped the sale, but Daniel still believed he could escape by convincing everyone Claire was mentally unstable after childbirth.
