Chapter 9 - THE SISTER MARA COULD NOT SILENCE
June Collins lived three states away.
She had not spoken to Mara in almost a year.
She traveled to the city with an attorney and a box of printed messages.
June explained that Mara contacted her after discovering Daniel’s medical history.
“How did she discover it?” Sophie asked.
June placed an old photograph on the table.
It showed Mara helping Evelyn sort boxes after Evelyn moved from the Whitmore family home.
Evelyn remembered the day.
Daniel had asked Mara to help organize documents for storage.
The medical file had been inside a locked desk drawer.
The drawer’s key remained taped beneath the wood.
Mara found it.
She photographed the report.
Then she called June.
“She said Daniel would never leave Sophie unless he believed another woman could give him children,” June testified.
Mara began researching donor conception.
She chose a clinic known for strict confidentiality.
She used donor sperm and her own eggs.
The embryo transfer occurred before the physical affair began.
Mara wanted to become pregnant first.
Then she seduced Daniel during a foundation trip and allowed him to calculate the timeline incorrectly.
When June called the plan monstrous, Mara replied:
Sophie has everything. I’m only taking the part she wasted.
June stopped speaking to her.
But Mara continued sending messages whenever she was frightened.
After the pregnancy test, she wrote:
He believes it. He actually thanked me for giving him a family.
Later:
Once the twins are born, Sophie will sign anything to escape the humiliation.
Another message involved Harbor Family Strategies.
Daniel thinks it protects assets during the divorce. He doesn’t know I control the company completely.
Mara had deceived both spouses for different reasons.
She used Sophie’s infertility fears to isolate her.
She used Daniel’s ego to prevent questions.
She used the twins as proof of a biological miracle Daniel desperately wanted to believe.
June also revealed that Mara planned to leave Daniel eventually.
The Cayman account was intended for her alone.
She described Daniel as “the bridge” between Sophie’s marriage and Whitmore money.
Daniel attended June’s deposition remotely.
He remained silent until the final message appeared.
After the divorce, I’ll keep him long enough to secure the trust. Then I’m gone.
Daniel ended the call.
Sophie felt no satisfaction.
His devastation did not erase hers.
He had still chosen Mara.
He had still helped hide assets.
Mara’s deeper deception made Daniel another victim in one part of the story.
It did not make him innocent in the rest.
June agreed to assist with the twins’ temporary care if Mara was detained.
“I don’t want them punished for how they were conceived,” she said.
Sophie looked at the babies’ photographs.
