Chapter 14 - THE DAY MARA TESTIFIED
Mara wore white to court.
It was the same color Sophie had worn during the mansion confrontation.
She entered with her shoulders straight and her expression composed.
Her attorney argued that Daniel promised to leave Sophie.
He claimed the Harbor payments were authorized compensation.
He described the forged signatures as administrative shortcuts taken during a difficult pregnancy.
Then prosecutors played June’s messages.
Mara describing the donor conception.
Mara discussing Daniel’s infertility.
Mara planning the Cayman transfer.
Mara writing that Sophie would sign once she saw the twins.
The prosecutor asked, “Why did you carry those children into Mrs. Whitmore’s home?”
Mara looked toward Sophie.
“Daniel wanted his wife to understand the marriage was over.”
“Did you want her to understand?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Mara hesitated.
“I wanted her to stop pretending she could keep him.”
The prosecutor displayed the old medical report.
“You knew Daniel could not biologically father the twins.”
“I believed the report might be wrong.”
“Then why use donor sperm?”
“I wanted children.”
“Why forge Daniel’s consent?”
“He would have agreed.”
“Why not ask him?”
Mara’s composure slipped.
“Because men agree to things after they already love the result.”
The courtroom became silent.
The prosecutor continued.
“You created babies first, then created a story that required Daniel to accept them.”
“I gave him a family.”
“You gave him false parentage documents.”
Mara turned toward Sophie.
“She never appreciated him.”
Sophie did not react.
The prosecutor displayed Harbor’s records.
“Was stealing $612,000 also about appreciation?”
Mara claimed Daniel approved every transfer.
Some he had.
Others carried forged authorization.
The evidence separated their crimes precisely.
Daniel had knowingly hidden assets and approved false invoices.
Mara had expanded the scheme, stolen additional money, forged signatures, and attempted to escape with the funds.
Daniel testified under a civil cooperation agreement.
He admitted the affair.
He admitted trying to reduce Sophie’s divorce settlement.
He admitted signing documents without reading them because Mara assured him they were safe.
Mara stared at him with disbelief.
“You promised to protect me.”
Daniel looked at the babies’ empty seats in the protected family section.
“No. I promised you a life built on someone else’s pain.”
The prosecutor asked why he had finally cooperated.
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because Sophie was right. I am responsible for every choice carrying my signature.”
Sophie heard the words.
She believed he finally understood them.
Understanding came too late for their marriage.
