Chapter 5 - THE PREGNANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Mara announced her pregnancy at a foundation luncheon.
Sophie was standing beside the stage when Mara fainted.
Daniel reached her first.
He carried her into a private room while guests whispered.
Later that afternoon, Daniel returned home without his wedding ring.
Sophie sat at the kitchen table.
He remained near the doorway.
“Mara is pregnant.”
Sophie waited for the lie.
It never came.
Daniel admitted the affair had lasted almost a year.
He said it began when the marriage became “nothing but tests and disappointment.”
He claimed he never intended to hurt Sophie.
Then he said the sentence that ended whatever remained between them.
“Mara gave me what you couldn’t.”
Sophie felt the cruelty physically.
Not because the words were true.
Because Daniel chose the deepest wound he knew and pressed directly into it.
“When did you learn she was pregnant?”
“Six weeks ago.”
“You’ve known for six weeks and still slept in my house?”
“I needed time.”
“To decide which woman was more useful?”
Daniel called the question bitter.
Sophie asked him to leave.
Instead, he entered the study and returned with divorce documents prepared by the company’s attorney.
Mara had already reviewed them.
The proposal offered Sophie the lake house, a limited settlement, and confidentiality.
Daniel retained the marital home and his corporate holdings.
The agreement also contained a clause stating that Sophie would make no public claim regarding the twins’ paternity.
“They haven’t even been born,” she said.
“I’m protecting my children.”
Sophie looked at the papers.
“Were you ever planning to tell me before I signed?”
Daniel said nothing.
She refused the agreement and hired independent counsel.
Daniel became impatient.
He moved Mara into a company-owned apartment.
Then he began transferring money through Harbor Family Strategies.
Sophie’s attorney, Rachel Moore, warned that Daniel might be hiding marital and corporate assets.
Sophie started collecting records.
Mara gave birth prematurely at thirty-five weeks.
Twin boys.
Daniel sent Sophie a photograph from the hospital.
He was holding both babies.
Beneath the image, he wrote:
Now you understand why we need to finish the divorce.
Sophie did not respond.
That evening, Evelyn called.
Her voice shook.
“Before you confront Daniel, I need to show you something from his childhood.”
“Why now?”
“Because I saw the twins.”
Evelyn emailed the first page of an old oncology file.
Then she told Sophie not to trust Mara’s timeline.
“There was a surgery Daniel barely remembers,” Evelyn said. “And a final report he never received.”
Sophie stared at the hospital letterhead.
“What did the report say?”
Evelyn began crying.
