Chapter 2 - THE ENVELOPE EVELYN HID

Daniel did not open the envelope.

He looked at Evelyn as though she had placed a weapon between them.

“What did you tell Sophie?”

Evelyn’s voice was barely audible.

“I sent her records she had a right to see before you destroyed your marriage over a lie.”

Mara stepped between them.

“This is disgusting. Those are newborn babies, and all of you are turning this into some kind of courtroom.”

Sophie looked at her.

“You brought them into my home with divorce papers waiting.”

Daniel placed one twin carefully into a bassinet.

He kept the second child in his arms.

“My medical history is private.”

“It stopped being private when you blamed me for our infertility in front of both families,” Sophie said.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

For four years, Sophie had undergone blood tests, injections, ultrasounds, and two painful procedures.

Daniel had attended the first fertility appointment.

After that, he claimed work prevented him from returning.

Whenever doctors requested his testing, he delayed.

Sophie had assumed he was embarrassed.

She never imagined his mother possessed older results.

Daniel picked up the envelope.

“Why would you have this?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because the hospital sent the final report to our home when you were nineteen.”

“I was already at college.”

“Yes.”

“And you never gave it to me?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with shame.

“Your father had just died. You were barely sleeping. I told myself I would wait until you were stronger.”

“For how long?”

Evelyn had no answer.

Mara recovered first.

“Even if some old report exists, it proves nothing. Daniel and I were together. I became pregnant.”

Sophie opened the financial folder.

“These transfers prove something.”

Payments had moved from Whitmore Health Systems into Harbor Family Strategies, a consulting company with no employees, no public office, and no legitimate contracts.

Mara controlled it.

Daniel looked at the statements.

“You said those payments covered expansion research.”

“They did,” Mara replied quickly.

Sophie turned to the final page.

One payment had gone directly from Harbor Family Strategies to the North Haven Fertility Institute.

Another paid for a private maternity apartment under Mara’s name.

A third covered legal work involving “confidential parentage planning.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the blanket.

“What does parentage planning mean?”

Mara looked toward the babies rather than answering.

Sophie pushed the divorce papers closer to him.

“Sign them, Daniel. Then open your mother’s envelope.”

“You knew about this before tonight?”

“I learned enough to stop believing either of you.”

Daniel finally tore the envelope open.

The first page contained the name of a childhood oncology clinic.

The second listed a surgical procedure performed when he was sixteen.

Before he could reach the final report, Mara grabbed her purse.

“I’m taking the babies home.”

Two security officers appeared in the doorway.

Sophie had summoned them before Daniel arrived.

“No one is stopping you from leaving,” Sophie said. “But the financial records are already with the company’s board and the bank.”

Mara froze.

“You had no right.”

Sophie looked at the signed divorce papers.

“You stopped caring about my rights a long time ago.”

👉 While Daniel struggled to understand the old surgery report, Mara realized Sophie had already frozen the company she used to hide the truth.
