Chapter 13 - THE CHILDREN INSIDE THE SCANDAL
June moved into a temporary family apartment near the twins’ hospital.
The babies had spent their first weeks surrounded by attorneys, testing orders, and headlines.
June refused all interview requests.
“They are not evidence,” she told reporters. “They are children.”
Sophie heard the statement and privately thanked her through counsel.
The twins had done nothing wrong.
They had not chosen the affair.
They had not chosen the donor.
They had not asked to be carried into Sophie’s living room as weapons.
The court created protected trusts using money recovered from Mara’s frozen accounts.
Those funds could be used only for medical care, childcare, and education.
Daniel voluntarily contributed additional money.
His attorneys advised against it because payment might complicate the parentage case.
He insisted.
“I held them,” he said. “Whatever Mara did, they existed in my life before I learned the truth.”
The court clarified that financial support did not establish legal paternity.
Daniel accepted the condition.
It was the first important decision he made without trying to control how it looked.
Sophie learned about the contribution through discovery.
She did not praise him.
She did not object.
Daniel’s bond with the babies belonged to him.
It could not repair their marriage.
Mara requested visitation from custody.
June supported short, supervised video calls when child specialists believed they would not disrupt the babies.
She refused to teach the children that their mother had disappeared.
She also refused to pretend Mara’s choices carried no consequences.
Sophie never met the twins again after the mansion confrontation.
That distance was deliberate.
She wished them safety.
She did not force herself into a relationship created through betrayal.

During a preliminary hearing, Mara’s attorney attempted to subpoena Sophie’s fertility records.
He argued that Sophie’s treatment history explained her hostility.
Rachel objected.
The judge denied the request.
“Sophie Whitmore’s reproductive history did not cause the defendant to forge documents or steal money,” the judge said.
For the first time in years, Sophie’s body was not placed on trial.
After the hearing, women began writing to her.
Some had been blamed for infertility without joint testing.
Some had undergone years of treatment while partners refused basic examinations.
Some had been abandoned after medical diagnoses.
Sophie read every letter.
She decided that when the divorce ended, she would use part of her settlement to create something Daniel’s family had never offered anyone.
