Chapter 1 - THE BABIES IN HER LIVING ROOM

“They’re mine.”

Daniel Whitmore stood beneath the crystal chandelier with a newborn in each arm.

The twins were wrapped in white blankets. One slept against his chest. The other made a soft, restless sound while Mara Collins adjusted the cap covering his dark hair.

Mara had once been Sophie’s closest friend.

Now she stood inside Sophie’s home wearing a gray designer dress and the expression of a woman waiting to be crowned.

Sophie remained near the marble coffee table.

Signed divorce papers rested in front of her.

Daniel had expected screaming.

He expected her to throw something, beg him to reconsider, or collapse when he announced that Mara had given him the children Sophie had never been able to conceive.

Sophie did none of those things.

She looked at the two babies.

Then she looked at her husband.

“Sign where the flags are.”

Daniel’s confidence flickered.

“That’s all you have to say?”

“What were you hoping for?”

Mara shifted one baby against her shoulder.

“You don’t have to pretend this doesn’t hurt.”

Sophie’s hand tightened around the black folder inside her purse.

Her phone illuminated on the table.

A message from Daniel’s mother, Evelyn, appeared above a photograph of an old hospital record.

BEFORE YOU CONFRONT HIM, MAKE SURE MARA CANNOT MOVE THE MONEY.

Mara saw the screen.

Her smile vanished.

“Why are you so calm?”

The front doors opened.

Evelyn entered carrying a sealed medical envelope and a small flashlight. Her face was pale. Her hands shook so badly that the beam moved across the floor.

She looked at Daniel holding the twins.

Then she looked at Sophie.

“She still hasn’t told you?”

Daniel frowned.

“Told me what?”

Sophie removed the black folder and placed it beside the divorce papers.

An old surgical report appeared beneath the cover.

Beside it were bank statements showing more than $600,000 transferred into a company registered to Mara.

Mara took one step backward.

Daniel looked from his mother to the medical file.

“What is this?”

Sophie’s eyes filled with pain, but her voice remained controlled.

“Ask your mother.”

Evelyn placed the sealed envelope on the table.

Daniel stared at his own name printed across the front.

For the first time that evening, he looked down at the twins with uncertainty instead of pride.

👉 Daniel had entered the room believing the babies proved Sophie had failed him—but the medical file suggested they could never have been his.
