Chapter 4 - THE TEST DANIEL NEVER TOOK
The fertility clinic scheduled Daniel’s test five times.
He canceled five times.
The first cancellation was for a board meeting.
The second was for a flight.
The third happened after Daniel and Sophie argued in the parking lot.
“I have spent eighteen months being examined,” Sophie told him. “You can do one test.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Maybe I don’t want my masculinity reduced to a laboratory result.”
“And what do you think has happened to me?”
He left her standing beside the car.
Mara arrived twenty minutes later.
She brought coffee and sympathy.
“You shouldn’t have to beg your own husband to show up,” she said.
Sophie cried against her shoulder.
She did not notice Mara watching Daniel’s car disappear.
Eventually, Sophie stopped fertility treatment.
The hormones had exhausted her.
The marriage had become organized around disappointment.
Daniel treated her sadness as pressure.
He began sleeping in the guest room after arguments.
Mara became more visible inside the company.
Daniel appointed her vice president of strategic partnerships despite her limited healthcare experience.
When board members questioned the promotion, he called her loyal and creative.
Sophie attended the announcement dinner.
Mara thanked Daniel from the stage.
Then she thanked Sophie.
“For bringing me into this extraordinary family.”
The guests applauded.
Sophie smiled because she did not know what else to do.
Three weeks later, she found a hotel charge on Daniel’s corporate card.
Two rooms had been reserved.
Only one had been used.
Daniel claimed the hotel combined the invoices.
Mara claimed she stayed with another executive.
The executive denied attending the trip.
Sophie confronted Mara privately.
Her best friend did not look surprised.
“You’re exhausted,” Mara said. “The fertility treatments changed you.”
“Did you sleep with my husband?”
Mara’s eyes became wet.
“I held you through every failed month, and this is what you think of me?”
Sophie apologized.
That evening, Mara sent Daniel a message.
She did not know Sophie had recently restored the family tablet and his old account remained connected.
SHE SUSPECTS SOMETHING.
Daniel replied:
THEN STOP MAKING MISTAKES.
Sophie photographed the conversation.
She did not confront them.
Not yet.
The next message arrived an hour later.
Once Harbor is funded, we won’t need to hide much longer.
Sophie had never heard of Harbor.
She searched company records the following morning.
Harbor Family Strategies had received its first Whitmore payment six days earlier.
The amount was $85,000.
The invoice described “European patient-growth analysis.”
The company address belonged to a mailbox store.
