Chapter 8 - THE TEST DANIEL COULD NOT AVOID
Daniel agreed to the paternity test the next morning.
He did not do it for Sophie.
He did it because uncertainty had become unbearable.
Mara’s attorney attempted to delay the procedure.
She argued that the babies were premature and should not undergo unnecessary testing.
The court approved a noninvasive cheek swab.
Daniel arrived alone.
He had spent the night in a hotel because Sophie refused to allow him to remain in the mansion.
“You can’t throw me out of my own home,” he said.
“The house was purchased with my father’s trust before our marriage.”
Daniel had forgotten that detail.
Or perhaps he had assumed marriage eventually transformed everything into his.
Sophie changed the security codes.
Evelyn remained inside the guest wing after Sophie allowed her one night to recover.
Daniel did not speak to his mother.
At the testing center, he stared through the nursery glass while technicians collected samples.
For several weeks, he had carried the twins proudly through private hospital corridors.
He had chosen names.
He had ordered engraved silver cups.
He had told the board that becoming a father had changed his priorities.
Now he wondered whether Mara watched every celebration knowing the truth.
The result arrived four days later.
Daniel Whitmore was excluded as the biological father of both twins.
Probability of paternity: zero.
He read the report three times.
Then he called Sophie.
She answered because Rachel advised her to preserve every communication.
“You knew,” Daniel said.
“I suspected.”
“Why didn’t you tell me before I brought them to the house?”
“You did not ask me anything before announcing that Mara had given you what I couldn’t.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was angry.”
“You were cruel.”
“I believed they were mine.”
“You chose to betray me before they existed.”
He had no answer.
Mara continued insisting Daniel was their legal father because his name appeared on the birth certificates.
The hospital records contradicted her.
She had entered his name without his presence using an electronic acknowledgment form.
Daniel’s signature was attached.
He denied signing it.
A forensic review confirmed it had been copied from a Whitmore Foundation document.
The same digital signature appeared on several Harbor contracts.
Mara had forged him too.
Daniel’s humiliation became public when reporters learned the board had placed him on administrative leave.
He blamed Sophie for allowing the story to spread.
She replied through counsel.
“The facts became public because the company is legally required to disclose an investigation involving its chief executive.”
For years, Daniel had controlled the language surrounding their marriage.
Now he could not rewrite the record.
The babies remained with Mara under temporary court supervision while the parentage and financial cases proceeded.
Then North Haven Fertility Institute produced its preserved records.
The donor-conception paperwork contained Daniel’s forged signature.
The emergency contact was not Daniel.
It was Mara’s estranged older sister, June.
Investigators contacted her.
June’s first words were:
May you like
“I told Mara she could not build a family on another woman’s destruction.”
