Chapter 10 - THE CRIME DANIEL CHOSE

Daniel’s attorneys tried to separate him from Mara’s actions.

They argued he was deceived about the twins, the donor conception, and Harbor’s ownership.

All of that was true.

Then the board audit produced his messages.

Daniel had approved false consulting invoices.

He instructed the chief financial officer to categorize personal apartment expenses as international research.

He authorized transfers after Sophie filed for divorce.

In one message, the CFO warned that the payments could violate company policy.

Daniel replied:

I built this company. Move the money.

Another conversation with Mara was even clearer.

Mara: Sophie’s attorney will ask about Harbor.

Daniel: Once she signs, the assets are protected.

Mara: And if the board notices?

Daniel: They won’t challenge me over a private divorce.

Daniel had not known Mara planned to steal from him too.

But he had knowingly used company money to hide assets from Sophie and shareholders.

The board removed him as chief executive.

His name remained on the building.

His authority did not.

Daniel called Sophie from his attorney’s office.

“I made mistakes because I was trying to protect the company.”

“You used the company to finance an affair.”

“You benefited from Whitmore for years.”

“I never approved fake invoices.”

“You knew my work consumed me.”

“I knew you used work as permission to ignore everything else.”

Daniel’s anger returned.

“So now you take my mother’s secret and Mara’s fraud and make me responsible for all of it?”

“No.”

Sophie’s voice remained steady.

“You are responsible for the choices carrying your signature.”

Daniel became silent.

That distinction followed him through every hearing.

He was not responsible for the chemotherapy that left him infertile.

He was not responsible for Evelyn hiding the report.

He was not responsible for Mara using donor sperm and forging the birth records.

He was responsible for sleeping with Sophie’s best friend.

He was responsible for humiliating his wife.

He was responsible for falsifying corporate expenses and hiding marital assets.

He was responsible for choosing pride over testing.

The board filed a civil action to recover misused funds.

Federal investigators opened a fraud inquiry involving Harbor’s interstate transfers.

Daniel surrendered his passport.

Mara was arrested after attempting to move money from the Cayman account through a second shell company.

The twins were placed temporarily with June under family-court supervision.

Mara shouted that Sophie had stolen her children.

Sophie was not present.

She had no legal role in the custody case.

Yet Mara still needed Sophie to be the villain.

Without that story, she had to face what she had done herself.

👉 With Mara in custody and Daniel removed from the company, the divorce no longer concerned only betrayal—it became the legal map of every lie they had financed together.
