Chapter 18 - THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED APOLOGIZING
Sophie returned to the mansion only once after the divorce.
She planned to sell it.
The rooms were too large.
Every hallway held a version of herself waiting for Daniel to come home.
Rachel accompanied her while an appraiser moved through the property.
In the living room, the crystal chandelier still hung above the place where Daniel held the twins.
The signed divorce papers had once rested on the marble table.
Sophie stood there for several minutes.
Rachel asked whether she wanted the chandelier removed before the sale.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“It belongs to the house. The memory doesn’t.”
That distinction surprised her.
She no longer needed to destroy everything connected to the betrayal.
She simply no longer allowed it to define her.
Sophie sold the mansion to a family with four children.
She moved into a sunlit townhouse near the Clear Record office.
The new home had no ballroom, no staff wing, and no room designed to impress donors.
It had a small garden and a kitchen she actually used.
For the first year, Sophie lived alone.
Friends tried to introduce her to men.

She returned to painting, something she had abandoned during fertility treatment.
She traveled with Rachel.
She celebrated birthdays without waiting for Daniel to finish a meeting.
Eventually, she began dating a physician named Aaron Blake who worked in pediatric rehabilitation.
She told him the entire story before their relationship became serious.
Not because she owed him an explanation.
Because she refused to build intimacy around hidden files.
Aaron did not tell her that the betrayal made her stronger.
He did not describe her pain as a gift.
He said, “You deserved better before you survived it.”
They moved slowly.
Sophie did not know whether she wanted children.

Two years later, Aaron proposed in her small garden.
Sophie did not answer immediately.
He waited without panic.
