Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY DISPUTE THAT BECAME A CRIME
The police separated everyone.
Claire sat on the sofa while a paramedic examined her cheek and checked her pulse.
Her heart rate was dangerously high.
The paramedic wanted to take her to the hospital.
Claire refused to leave until officers collected the transfer papers, the forged power of attorney and her phone.
Her father insisted he had only tried to calm her.
Evan claimed Claire struck herself against the wall.
Then Mara arrived.
She carried printed confirmation showing the recording had uploaded before police entered.
She played the father’s words.
“Your brother needs it more than your life.”
The officers stopped treating the incident as a private family disagreement.
Claire’s father was arrested for assault, coercion and attempted financial exploitation.
Evan was arrested for participating in the attempted theft and interfering with Claire’s phone.
Both men were released the next afternoon pending further investigation.
A temporary protection order prohibited them from contacting Claire.
Her father violated it within an hour.
He called from an unknown number.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
Claire hung up.
A voicemail followed.
“If Evan gets hurt, it will be your fault.”
Mara preserved the message.
That evening, a process server arrived.
Claire’s father and Evan had filed an emergency petition to declare her medically incompetent.
The filing claimed Claire suffered from confusion, paranoia and emotional instability caused by reduced blood flow.
It included statements from three relatives who said Claire had become “irrationally hostile” toward her family.
The forged power of attorney appeared as evidence that Claire had previously chosen her father to manage her affairs.
“They know it’s fake,” Claire said.
“They don’t need it to survive forever,” Mara replied. “They need it to create enough doubt to delay your surgery and freeze the trust.”
The hearing was scheduled for Friday.
Claire’s surgery was Monday.
If the judge appointed her father as temporary conservator, he could attempt to cancel the operation, replace Mara and access the medical reserve.
Claire’s cardiologist wrote an urgent letter confirming that Claire was fully competent.
The district attorney opened an investigation into the forged documents.
Still, court would require Claire to testify.
Stress caused chest pain.
Her medication made her weak.
Her father’s attorney would use every symptom against her.
Claire looked at the bruised reflection in Mara’s office window.
Her family believed illness had made her powerless.
