Chapter 4 - THE FIRST ATTEMPT TO ERASE HER VOICE
A week after the forged transfer, Claire’s father began asking strange questions.
Was she forgetting appointments?
Did her medication make her confused?
Had she ever fainted while alone?
At first, Claire assumed he was worried.
Then Mara showed her a letter from a family attorney.
The letter questioned Claire’s legal capacity to manage medical and financial decisions.
It suggested appointing her father as temporary conservator before surgery.
Claire read the page twice.
“He wants control of me?”
“He wants control of the trust,” Mara said.
The petition had not been filed yet.
It was a warning.
Sign the transfer voluntarily, or they would argue that Claire was too ill to refuse.
Mara documented the forged signature and notified the bank.
She also arranged a competency evaluation with an independent physician.
Claire passed easily.
Her heart was sick.
Her mind was not.
When her father learned about the evaluation, he appeared at her workplace.
He waited until Claire finished with her last patient.
“You hired a lawyer against your own family?”
“Mara has always managed the trust.”
“She filled your head with lies.”
“You tried to declare me incompetent.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“From making decisions you’ll regret when Evan is dead.”
Claire felt the familiar pressure in her chest.
Her father noticed her hand move toward her heart.
Instead of helping, he lowered his voice.
“Stress could kill you before the surgery. Do you understand that?”
The words sounded like concern.
The look in his eyes did not.
Claire stepped away.
“Are you threatening me?”
He smiled sadly.
“This is what Mara has done. She has made you suspicious of everyone who loves you.”
That evening, Claire found a note beneath her windshield wiper.
Your brother pays Friday. One way or another.
There was no signature.
She took it to the police.
An officer said they could file a report, but the message did not identify a sender or contain a direct threat against Claire.
Her father dismissed it as gambling intimidation.
“Give Evan the money and it ends.”
Claire refused.
Two days later, the hospital called to ask why she had canceled her preoperative assessment.
Claire had canceled nothing.
Someone had impersonated her.
The appointment was restored, but the delay pushed her surgery date back by ten days.
Her surgeon warned that another interruption could be dangerous.
Claire called Mara.
“This isn’t only about stealing the trust anymore.”
Mara agreed.
