Chapter 6 - THE SIGNATURE SHE NEVER GAVE
The forged power of attorney arrived by certified mail.
It named Claire’s father as her medical and financial agent.
Her signature looked convincing.
The witness signatures belonged to two men Claire had never met.
A notary seal appeared at the bottom.
Mara examined it under magnification.
“The commission number is real,” she said. “The notary may be involved.”
The document allowed Claire’s father to access accounts, communicate with doctors and make decisions if Claire became incapacitated.
It also authorized him to request emergency trust distributions.
The forgery was no longer a family argument.
It was a coordinated financial crime.
Mara sent copies to the district attorney and the state notary board.
The notary disappeared before investigators reached her registered address.
Claire’s father continued behaving as though nothing had happened.
He left a voicemail asking her to attend Sunday dinner.
“I don’t want money discussed,” he said. “I only want my children together.”
Claire almost deleted it.
Then Evan sent a photograph.
Their father sat at the kitchen table with his head in his hands.
Beside him was a foreclosure notice.
This one was real.
The lender had accelerated the mortgage after discovering false income documents in the refinance applications.
The family home would be sold unless $190,000 was paid within thirty days.
Claire felt grief despite everything.
Rebecca had planted roses behind that house.
Claire’s childhood height marks remained inside a bedroom closet.
Her father understood exactly what those memories meant.
He called again.
“Your mother would not let us lose her home.”
Claire’s voice hardened.
“Mom would not ask me to die to save it.”
“No one is asking you to die.”
“You delayed my surgery.”
He went silent.
Claire heard Evan speaking nearby.
Then her father said, “Come here tomorrow. We will settle this privately.”
Mara advised against going.
Claire refused the invitation.
The next afternoon, her father appeared outside her apartment with Evan.
Building security called Claire.
She told them not to allow either man upstairs.
Her father claimed he was delivering medical paperwork.
Security accepted a sealed envelope.
Inside was a copy of Claire’s surgery authorization.
Across the top, someone had written:
SIGN THE TRANSFER OR THIS APPOINTMENT DISAPPEARS TOO.
Mara immediately requested police protection.
But before officers could respond, the building’s fire alarm activated.
Residents began leaving their apartments.
