Evan’s betting operation was run by Nolan Price, the owner of several private clubs.
On paper, Nolan managed entertainment venues.
In reality, he operated illegal sports books and used wealthy gamblers to move money through legitimate businesses.
Evan had become useful because his father controlled a small property-management company.

“You knew?”

Claire looked at the man she had spent years trying to please.
He appeared exhausted.

But not sorry.
“You chose Evan every time.”
“He needed more.”
“So you took from me.”
“You were always stronger.”
The excuse was almost worse than the abuse.
He had punished Claire because she survived what Evan refused to face.
Her father stepped closer.
“Nolan will kill him.”
“Help the police.”
“If I cooperate, I go to prison.”
Claire understood.
He was asking her to risk her life so he could preserve his freedom.

The door opened.
Mara entered with two officers.
Claire’s father turned toward the window, but the room was six floors above the ground.

As officers handcuffed him, he looked at Claire.
“You are sending your own father to prison.”
Claire’s voice was weak but steady.
“No. I finally stopped standing between you and what you chose.”
His arrest allowed investigators to search his encrypted accounts.
There they found a payment order scheduled for the night before Claire’s surgery.
