Chapter 12 - THE FIGHT BESIDE HER HOSPITAL BED

Claire remained unconscious for seventeen hours.
Machines breathed rhythmically around her.
A clear tube ran from her chest.
Mara sat beside the bed with Rebecca’s sealed letter in her bag.
Claire’s father arrived with an emergency court order request.
The order had not been granted.
He told hospital security it was pending and demanded access as Claire’s parent.
The officers stationed outside refused.
He began shouting in the corridor.
“That lawyer is not family!”
Mara stepped through the doorway.
“Family does not forge medical authority.”
“You have turned her against us.”
“You slapped a woman whose heart was failing.”
“She was destroying her brother.”
“No. Evan destroyed himself.”
Claire’s father lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand what those people will do to him.”
“Then help police arrest them.”
“He owes more than money.”
Mara studied him.
“How much?”
He refused to answer.
Detectives already knew Evan’s gambling debt exceeded $400,000.
But the father’s fear suggested something else.
The illegal betting operation had used Evan to move money through the family business.
Evan had not only lost bets.
He had laundered payments.
His creditors threatened to expose every transaction unless they were paid.
Claire’s trust money was meant to silence them.
If investigators followed the debt, they would uncover the father’s involvement too.
Mara recorded the conversation openly.
“You weren’t saving Evan,” she said. “You were saving yourself.”
His face hardened.
He reached toward her phone.
An officer stepped between them.
At that moment, a monitor sounded inside Claire’s room.
Mara rushed back.
Claire’s eyelids moved.
The nurse called her name.
“Claire, can you hear me?”
Claire slowly opened her eyes.
She could not speak around the breathing tube.
Mara leaned closer.
“You’re safe. The surgery is over.”
Claire’s gaze moved toward the corridor where her father’s voice remained audible.
Tears filled her eyes.
Mara held up the sealed envelope.
“We found something your mother left for you.”
Claire lifted one weak finger and pointed toward it.
Mara understood.
Not yet.
First Claire wanted the person outside her room removed.
A nurse gave her a writing board.
Claire slowly wrote four words.
HE IS NOT MY AGENT.
The hospital scanned the statement into her record.
The emergency court rejected her father’s motion minutes later.
Claire had awakened in time to speak for herself.
But Evan’s illegal gambling partners now knew police were following the money.

And they believed Claire still possessed records that could identify them.
👉 Claire’s family had failed to control her in the hospital, but the men behind Evan’s debt were about to turn their attention toward the one witness still recovering in bed.
