Chapter 10 - THE INSIDER IN THE HOSPITAL
Hospital security traced the false cancellation.
It had been entered through the account of a billing supervisor named Denise Cole.
Denise had worked there for twelve years.
She had access to surgery schedules, insurance authorizations and patient contact information.
When investigators reached her office, she was gone.
Her computer remained unlocked.
Emails showed payments from a consulting company controlled by Claire’s father.
Denise had provided the original surgery date.
She had canceled the preoperative assessment.
She had sent copies of billing records and trust authorizations.
Most importantly, she had informed Claire’s father that the hospital would return unused funds to the trust if Claire died before surgery.
That information changed the purpose of the family’s plan.
If Claire transferred the money, Evan received it.
If she refused and died before treatment, her father intended to argue that the trust should reimburse him as next of kin for “caregiving expenses.”
Either outcome rewarded them.
Mara stood beside Claire’s hospital bed while detectives searched for Denise.
“You were never supposed to reach surgery without them controlling the trust,” she said.
Claire felt cold despite the blankets.
Her father had not merely been reckless with her health.
He had built a plan around the possibility that she would die.
A nurse entered to prepare Claire for preoperative testing.
The nurse scanned Claire’s identification bracelet twice.
Then she frowned.
“There’s an allergy listed that wasn’t here yesterday.”
Claire had supposedly developed a severe reaction to the primary medication used during her procedure.
The false entry would have delayed surgery until specialists completed additional tests.
Claire did not have that allergy.
Security locked the medical record.
The surgeon created a new protected file accessible only through biometric approval.
Major financial-crimes detectives joined the case after discovering the forged trust requests.
Denise was found that evening at a bus station.
She carried $18,000 in cash and a phone containing messages from Evan.
One message read:
Keep her out of the operating room until Dad gets authority.
Denise agreed to cooperate.
She admitted accepting money.
She claimed Evan threatened to expose her own billing fraud if she stopped helping.
Then she revealed that Claire’s father had asked a darker question.
He wanted to know what would happen if Claire signed financial papers while heavily sedated after surgery.
Mara immediately requested officers for Claire’s hospital floor.
The surgery would proceed at dawn.
Claire’s family knew she would be unconscious for hours.
