Chapter 7 - THE EMERGENCY UPLOAD

Claire tried to close the door.
Evan forced his shoe into the opening.
“Stop acting like we’re criminals.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Dad handled the paperwork.”
Her father pushed past them and entered the apartment.
Claire reached for her phone.
Evan took it first.
He turned off the screen and placed it facedown on the console.
“What you’re doing is elder abuse,” Claire said.
Her father laughed.
“I’m fifty-eight.”
“You’re using me.”
“We raised you.”
“Mom raised me.”
The sentence changed his face.
He grabbed Claire’s arm.
“You think your mother was perfect? She left us a trust we couldn’t touch while the family collapsed.”
“She protected my treatment.”
“She protected you from us.”
Claire stared at him.
He had spoken with more bitterness than grief.
Evan opened the envelope containing the transfer authorization.
The amount had changed.
Not $75,000.
Not $190,000.
$280,000.
Claire’s entire remaining surgery reserve.
“Where would this go?” she asked.
Evan lifted his glass.
“Somewhere it can fix everything.”
“Your gambling debt?”
“Our lives.”
Her father pushed a pen into her hand.
“Sign.”
Claire refused.
He slapped her.
Her cheek struck the wall.
The pain blurred her vision, but she did not drop the envelope.
Her father leaned over her.
“Your brother needs it more than your life.”
“That money keeps me alive.”
“You can borrow for surgery.”
“No lender will approve me while I’m too sick to work.”
“Then Mara can find another solution.”
Claire’s phone lit up behind them.
What neither man knew was that Mara had installed an emergency recording system after the forged power of attorney appeared.
Three presses on the side of Claire’s watch activated the phone remotely.
The audio uploaded automatically to Mara’s secured server.
Evan noticed the red recording bar.
“Dad… she’s recording.”
Claire grabbed the phone.
The message on the screen read:
Emergency upload received.
Outside, footsteps approached.
The police had been notified through the same system.
Her father reached for the phone.
Claire backed against the wall.
“You can’t touch the trust.”
The knock came.
Police announced themselves.
Evan whispered, “Delete it.”
Her father looked at Claire’s swollen cheek.
Then at the transfer form.
He tore the document in half.
But the recording had already preserved every word.
The officers entered moments later.
Claire’s father tried to call it a misunderstanding.
Then one officer picked up the hospital file from the floor.
Her father said, “She wasn’t supposed to see that date yet.”
Claire looked at him.
The officer’s body camera captured the silence that followed.

Her father had just admitted he knew information he could only have obtained illegally.
👉 The recording saved Claire from being forced to sign—but her father’s next move would be even more dangerous because it would happen inside a courtroom.
