Chapter 11 - THE MAN LISTED AS FAMILY
Claire was taken into surgery at 5:42 a.m.
Mara remained in the waiting area.
So did two police officers.
The procedure was expected to last six hours.
Three hours after it began, a man approached the surgical floor carrying flowers.
He identified himself as Claire’s uncle.
The visitor system showed him on an approved family list.
Mara knew Claire had no living uncle.
Security stopped him.
The flowers concealed a small recording device, blank financial forms and a stamp bearing Claire’s copied signature.
The man was a private courier hired by Evan.
His instructions were to enter Claire’s room after surgery, place her fingerprint on two documents and leave before she regained full awareness.
One document transferred trust money.
The other changed the beneficiary of a small insurance policy to Evan.
Police arrested the courier.
He provided the messages and payment record.
Evan was arrested again.
Claire’s father claimed he knew nothing about the scheme.
Then investigators searched the family home.
They found Claire’s old tax files, copied identification, hospital letters and practice sheets filled with imitations of her signature.
They also found Rebecca’s locked metal box hidden behind a false wall in the study.
Claire’s father said the box belonged to his late wife and had never been opened.
Mara recognized it immediately.
Rebecca had told her about it before her death.
The key should have been inside the medical trust archive.
Mara retrieved it.
The box contained ledgers, bank records and a sealed letter addressed to Claire.
Mara did not open the letter.
Claire deserved to read it herself.
The ledgers were different.
They showed that the financial abuse had begun long before Rebecca died.
Transfers from a childhood medical account.
Cash withdrawals.
Payments to gambling platforms connected to Evan when he was only nineteen.
Rebecca had discovered the theft.
She had confronted her husband.
Then she created the protected trust.
The opening scene in Claire’s apartment had not been a sudden act of desperation.
It had been the continuation of a pattern Rebecca had identified years earlier.
While investigators cataloged the records, the surgeon entered the waiting room.
Mara stood.
The surgery was complete.
Claire had survived.
But there had been a serious complication.
Her heart was stable.
Her brain had been deprived of oxygen briefly during the procedure.
