Chapter 14 - THE TRAP AT THE EMPTY HOUSE
Mara and federal investigators used the promised payment to contact Nolan.
They sent a message from Claire’s father’s seized account.
Trust transfer delayed. Cash available at Rebecca’s house. Come alone.
Nolan did not come alone.
He arrived after midnight with two men.
Agents watched from neighboring properties.
The family house appeared empty.
Inside the study, a briefcase sat beside Rebecca’s metal box.
The briefcase contained marked cash.
The box contained copied ledgers.
Nolan entered through the back door using a key Evan had provided months earlier.
His men searched the rooms.
One found the childhood photographs Claire’s father had threatened to lose to foreclosure.
He swept them from a shelf without looking.
Nolan opened the briefcase.
Agents entered.
He reached for a weapon but surrendered when red targeting lights crossed his chest.
His phone contained messages from Evan and Claire’s father.

Instructions to pressure Claire.
One message from the father read:
She is sick. She will sign when she understands the alternative.
Another from Evan read:
If surgery gets canceled, Dad becomes agent. Then we move everything.
The conspiracy was no longer difficult to prove.
Nolan and his associates were charged with illegal gambling, money laundering, extortion and conspiracy.
Evan’s cooperation became his only chance to avoid the harshest sentence.
He asked to speak with Claire.
She refused.
He sent a letter instead.
Mara read it first.
Evan apologized for “letting addiction make him desperate.”
He blamed their father for teaching him that Claire’s needs were negotiable.
He asked Claire to tell prosecutors he had never wanted her surgery canceled.
The messages proved otherwise.
Claire returned the letter unanswered.
Recovery required more energy than anger.
She learned to walk longer distances.
She practiced breathing through pain.
She attended cardiac rehabilitation while officers guarded the floor.
Every day, Mara carried Rebecca’s sealed letter.

Then the forensic accountant completed the review of Rebecca’s ledgers.
The report showed the first stolen withdrawal from Claire’s childhood medical fund.
