Chapter 8 - The Marriage Contract

Darnell demanded to speak to Lenora privately.

She refused.

“Anything you say can be said here.”

He looked toward the guests.

“You want them to hear our personal business?”

“You invited them into it when you announced our divorce from the stage.”

Mr. Vincent opened another file.

Seven years earlier, before the wedding, Darnell signed a marital agreement.

He had barely read it.

He remembered Lenora saying a family attorney required basic protections because she owned inherited property.

Darnell assumed the property was sentimental jewelry and perhaps a modest account.

The agreement stated that all Harrison trust assets remained separate.

It also specified that any spouse who committed fraud, coercive financial abuse, or intentional violence against a beneficiary forfeited access to joint investment proceeds derived from trust capital.

Darnell laughed nervously.

“That clause cannot be enforceable.”

Mr. Vincent replied, “It has been upheld repeatedly.”

“You tricked me.”

“You had independent counsel.”

“My attorney said it was standard.”

“Your attorney advised you to request complete disclosure. You declined because you stated her assets were not worth investigating.”

Several guests heard that.

Darnell’s own arrogance had prevented him from learning the truth.

Lenora remembered the meeting.

Her attorney asked whether she wanted to disclose the full size of her inheritance.

She said yes.

Darnell interrupted.

“I’m not marrying her for money. Whatever little account she has can stay hers.”

At the time, Lenora felt relieved.

Now she understood he had not been noble.

He had been dismissive.

Mr. Vincent explained that Washington Strategic Development had been funded through loans, not gifts.

The loans contained conduct and fraud provisions.

Darnell had violated both.

Effective immediately, the trust could call the debt, freeze further capital, and seek control of pledged company shares.

Darnell’s expensive watch suddenly seemed heavier on his wrist.

“You’re taking my company.”

Lenora looked at him.

“You used my capital to build it, then tried to hide its money and discard me.”

May you like

She paused.

“I’m protecting what you tried to steal.”
