Chapter 25 - Sentencing Day
Darnell faced decades in federal prison.
His attorneys requested leniency.
They argued he had lost his company, marriage, reputation, and assets.
The prosecutor replied, “Those were consequences, not payments for the crimes.”
Lenora delivered a victim-impact statement.
She did not ask for the maximum sentence.
She described what Darnell took.
Sleep.
Trust.
Years spent measuring his moods.
The ability to enter a room without locating exits.
The belief that love made home safe.
Then she described what he failed to take.
“My name was never the source of my worth,” she said. “It was simply the thing that forced him to reveal how differently he treated people when he feared consequences.”
Darnell looked at her.
For one brief moment, he seemed close to apology.
Then he spoke.
“If she had told me the truth, none of this would have happened.”
The judge stared at him.
“You continue to blame the victim for failing to provide information that might have made you less willing to abuse her.”
Darnell was sentenced to twenty-eight years in federal prison, followed by restitution obligations.
Beverly received four years.
Candace received three years and substantial restitution after cooperation.
Dr. Pike received probation under his agreement but lost his medical career permanently.
As deputies led Darnell away, he looked at Lenora.
“You still loved me.”
She answered quietly.
“Yes.”
He seemed surprised.
Lenora continued.
“That is why what you did mattered.”
She did not need to deny the love to justify leaving.
Love had existed.
So had abuse.
One did not erase the other.
Darnell disappeared through the courtroom door.
