Chapter 10 - The First Arrest

Detective Grant asked Lenora whether she wished to file a formal assault complaint.
“Yes.”
Darnell stared at her.
“After seven years, you’re doing this?”
“After seven years, I’m stopping this.”
The detective instructed Darnell to turn around.
Beverly rushed forward.
“You cannot arrest him at a charity gala.”
“The location does not change the law.”
“He is a respected businessman.”
“The law does not change for that either.”
Darnell did not resist physically.
He tried persuasion.
Then threats.
Then disbelief.
“You’re destroying everything we built,” he told Lenora as the detective secured his wrists.
Lenora answered, “You destroyed it when you decided my dignity was expendable.”
He was led through the ballroom.
Guests who once surrounded him moved aside.
His polished shoes crossed the same marble where Lenora had fallen.
Near the doors, he turned.
“This isn’t over.”
Mr. Wilson spoke into his radio.
“Record that statement.”
Darnell’s face tightened.
The doors closed behind him.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Then Beverly looked at Lenora.
“You could ask them not to charge him.”
Lenora touched the red mark around her wrist.
“You could have asked him not to hurt me.”
“I didn’t know he would push you.”
“You encouraged him to leave me with nothing.”
Beverly’s eyes filled.
“I was protecting my son.”
“No. You were feeding the worst part of him.”
Lenora looked toward Candace.
“And you were rewarding it.”
Candace said nothing.
Mr. Vincent asked Lenora whether she wanted the gala ended.
She looked at the gathered donors.
The event had been organized to fund emergency housing for women escaping financial and domestic abuse.
The irony was unbearable.
“No,” she said. “The gala continues.”
She stepped onto the platform where Darnell had announced her humiliation.
Her hip hurt.
Her necklace was broken.
But her voice held.
“Tonight’s cause matters more now than it did an hour ago.”
The room rose slowly.
Not in celebration.
In recognition.

Lenora had entered the ballroom as a woman Darnell believed he could erase.
She now stood at its center as the person who decided what happened next.
