Chapter 21 - Lenora Takes the Stand

The courtroom was full when Lenora testified.
Darnell watched her approach.
For years, one look from him could make her reconsider a sentence.
This time, she looked directly at the jury.
The prosecutor began with the gala.
Lenora described the announcement.
The threats.
The grip.
The shove.
She did not exaggerate.
Her restraint made the footage more powerful.
Then the questions moved backward.
Financial control.
Isolation.
Beverly’s pressure.
The affair.
The planned false diagnosis.
“Why did you not reveal your family identity to the defendant?” the prosecutor asked.
“Because I wanted to be loved without it.”
“Why did you continue withholding it after marriage?”
“Because the safer I needed the information to remain, the more dangerous revealing it felt.”
Darnell’s attorney approached for cross-examination.
“You lied to your husband for seven years.”
“I did not disclose the size of a legally protected inheritance.”
“You allowed him to believe he was the primary provider.”
“He chose to believe that.”
“You secretly controlled the investors behind his company.”
“I disclosed that the funds came from private investment entities. He declined further information.”
“Because he trusted you.”
Lenora paused.
“He trusted that I had no power.”
The courtroom became still.
The attorney changed direction.
“You could have ended the marriage privately.”
“I intended to.”
“Instead, you attended a gala where you knew he might announce the separation.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted him exposed.”
“I wanted to hear what he planned to accuse me of before signing anything.”
“Then you provoked him.”
“No.”
Her voice did not rise.
“Refusing humiliation is not provocation. Asking about missing money is not provocation. Standing in a room where my husband wanted obedience is not provocation.”
The attorney returned to his table.
Darnell looked at Lenora with hatred.
She recognized it.
May you like
Not because she had harmed him.
Because she had explained him clearly enough that others could see.
