Chapter 15 - Beverly’s Friend
Beverly denied arranging the false psychiatric report.
Then investigators recovered deleted voice messages.
In one, she told Dr. Pike:
Lenora has always imagined people are against her. We need something official before she embarrasses Darnell.
Dr. Pike asked whether he could interview Lenora.
Beverly answered:
That would only give her time to perform normal.
The cruelty of the sentence stunned even investigators.
Beverly had spent years describing Lenora as quiet, dull, and weak.
Now she intended to use the same reserved nature as proof of manipulation.
Dr. Pike agreed to produce a preliminary opinion for fifty thousand dollars.
The payment came from Beverly’s shell account.
Faced with evidence, he surrendered his medical license and cooperated.
Beverly was charged with conspiracy, fraud, and attempted evidence fabrication.
At her arraignment, she looked for Darnell.
He did not attend.
He sent a lawyer.
Beverly finally understood that the son she protected would sacrifice her if it helped him.
She called Lenora from jail.
The call was blocked by the protection order.
Then she wrote a letter.
I treated you harshly because I believed you made Darnell smaller.
Lenora read the sentence twice.
Even Beverly’s apology centered Darnell.
She continued.
I see now that he used my love for him.
Lenora stopped reading.
Beverly had not loved Darnell in a way that required honesty.
She worshiped his success because it made her feel elevated.
Whenever he harmed someone, she renamed it ambition.
Whenever Lenora resisted, Beverly called it disrespect.
Lenora gave the letter to her attorney.
No response.
Silence once protected Darnell.
