Chapter 14 - Candace Wants Immunity
Candace requested a meeting with federal prosecutors.
She brought an attorney and three encrypted drives.
Darnell had stored copies of company records in her apartment.
He told her they contained evidence that Lenora had manipulated investors.
In reality, the drives documented his own fraud.
Candace offered them in exchange for immunity.
The prosecutors refused full protection.
“You helped create false invoices,” an agent said.
“I didn’t know the money was stolen.”
“You accepted two million dollars.”
“I thought it was compensation.”
“For an affair?”
Candace flinched.
Her attorney interrupted.
She could still provide useful information.
Darnell had discussed a plan to declare Lenora mentally unfit.
He wanted control of marital decisions and access to any property she had hidden.
Candace recorded one conversation because she feared he might later blame her.
In the audio, Darnell said:
Once the doctors say she’s unstable, nobody will care what she claims.
Candace asked how he would obtain such a diagnosis.
Darnell replied:
My mother knows someone.
The “someone” was Dr. Gerald Pike, a private psychiatrist who socialized with Beverly.
He had never treated Lenora.
Yet a draft evaluation on his computer described her as paranoid, financially irresponsible, and prone to delusions of persecution.
The report was dated two days after the gala.
Darnell intended to file it during divorce proceedings.
Dr. Pike claimed it was only a hypothetical template.
Metadata showed Beverly sent him personal details about Lenora.
Most were false.
The conspiracy expanded from financial theft into planned legal coercion.
Candace’s cooperation reduced her exposure but did not erase it.
She eventually pleaded guilty to wire fraud and evidence conspiracy.
Before leaving the meeting, she asked whether Lenora would ever forgive her.
The prosecutor replied, “That is not part of any agreement.”
