Chapter 7 - The Security Recording

Mr. Vincent ordered the ballroom surveillance secured.
Darnell’s expression sharpened.
“There are cameras?”
“Throughout the estate.”
“Recording guests without consent?”
“Recording common areas for safety.”
Lenora looked toward the chandelier above the central floor.
Darnell followed her gaze.
A small security lens was integrated into the architecture.
It had captured the announcement.
The threats.
The grip on Lenora’s arm.
The shove.
The broken necklace.
Everything.
Darnell lowered his voice.
“This was a private disagreement.”
Mr. Wilson answered.
“It became an estate security matter when you used physical force.”
“You’re a guard.”
Mr. Wilson stood straighter.
“I am director of protective operations for the Harrison family.”
Darnell had always assumed the elderly man standing near the archway was ceremonial staff.
He never noticed how other guards deferred to him.
Mr. Wilson continued.
“I served Miss Harrison’s grandparents for thirty-two years. I carried her from this ballroom after her parents’ memorial service. You will not tell me what I witnessed tonight.”
Darnell looked away.
Mr. Vincent asked Lenora whether she wanted police contacted.
The ballroom held its breath.
Darnell stepped closer.
“Think carefully.”
Security officers moved between them.
Lenora’s voice remained level.
“That sounded like another threat.”
“I’m reminding you that public scandal will damage both of us.”
“No, Darnell. It will reveal both of us.”
She looked at Mr. Vincent.
“Contact the police.”
Beverly gasped.
“You would have your husband arrested?”
“I asked for the law to be contacted after he assaulted me.”
Candace glanced toward the nearest exit.
A guard noticed.
“Please remain where you are.”
“I did nothing.”
Lenora looked at her phone.
“You recorded everything.”
“That proves I didn’t touch you.”
“It may also prove what Darnell told you before he announced the divorce.”
Candace went still.
Earlier that night, while filming herself near the champagne tower, she had accidentally recorded Darnell discussing the plan to transfer company money before publicly discarding Lenora.

The device in her hand no longer protected her.
It had become a witness.
