Chapter 8 - The Contract Beneath the Veil
Two days before the wedding, Nolan brought Elena a folder.
He called it a final estate-planning formality.
She opened it inside the bridal suite.
The waiver was there.
So was a spousal voting agreement and a statement claiming Elena had independently approved every Vale Capital amendment.
“I’m not signing.”
Nolan’s smile vanished.
“Our lawyers prepared this.”
“Your lawyers.”
“Once we are married, our interests need to be aligned.”
“They already are if you’re honest.”
He closed the door.
“You’ve been speaking to your father.”
“No.”
“Then who explained the misconduct clause?”
Elena remained silent.
Nolan looked at the pendant.
Understanding flashed across his face.
“What is that?”
“My mother’s.”
He reached for it.
Elena stepped back.
Nolan caught her arm.
“Take it off.”
“No.”
Celeste entered before the confrontation escalated.
She looked at the unsigned papers.
“Still resisting?”
Elena turned toward her.
“How much money is inside Silver Hall Advisory?”
Celeste became still.
Nolan slapped Elena.
The force split the corner of her mouth.
Celeste closed the door behind her.
For a moment, Elena believed she might not leave the suite.
Then voices approached outside.
Wedding staff.
Nolan released her.
He lowered his voice.
“You will sign before tomorrow’s ceremony.”
“No.”
“You think your father can save you from everything?”
“I think you’re afraid of what he’ll see.”
Nolan’s face changed.
He gripped Elena beneath the jaw.
“Your father will see a bride who had too much champagne and became emotional.”
Celeste retrieved the makeup kit.
Together, they discussed how to conceal the bruise while Elena stood in front of them.
That conversation recorded clearly.
Later, Elena locked herself inside the bathroom and activated the upload.
The attorney called.
“Leave through the service corridor.”
“I can’t.”
“You can.”
“Nolan still has the original server key.”
“Elena—”
“If Celeste deletes the evidence tonight, the board case weakens.”
“You have enough to stop the wedding.”
“I need enough to stop the company theft too.”
She remained.
Not because she believed marriage would save Nolan.
