After the trial, Elena stayed in a small apartment near her office.
Daniel offered the Vale estate.
She declined.
He offered full-time security.
She chose one vetted driver and an emergency contact system.
He offered to place her in charge of Vale Capital’s preservation investments.
She said no.
At first, Daniel struggled.
Protecting Elena had always meant solving problems quickly.
Now she needed something else.
Space.

He waited outside until Elena invited him in.
“You could have used your key,” she said.
“I don’t have one.”
“You always keep copies.”

“I failed you.”
“Nolan hurt me.”
“I made coming to me feel like giving up control.”
Elena said nothing.

He nodded.
“I know.”
Elena reached across the table.
“You were right about Nolan.”
“I wish I had been wrong.”
There was no triumphant father.
No daughter forced to confess that she should have listened.

He learned to ask before acting.
