Chapter 18 - Celeste’s Letter
Celeste’s letter contained no request for release.
No demand for forgiveness.
She admitted what she had done.
I saw Nolan grab you before the first bruise became visible.
I told myself the company needed stability.
Later, I told myself you could leave if it became serious.
When it became serious, I helped him keep you there.
Celeste described their childhood.
Their father praised Nolan for dominance and Celeste for protecting him.
Mistakes disappeared.
Employees were blamed.
Money repaired public consequences.
By adulthood, both siblings believed the family name mattered more than truth.
Celeste wrote:
I was jealous because you helped build something Nolan could not build alone. I thought removing you would restore our family. Instead, I proved there was nothing worth restoring.
Elena read the letter once.
Then again.
Understanding arrived.
Forgiveness did not.
She responded with three sentences.
I believe you understand more now.
That understanding does not restore trust or create a relationship between us.

Elena did not follow her progress closely.
Celeste’s rehabilitation belonged to Celeste.
Nolan also wrote.
His letter was longer.
He apologized, then blamed stress.
He described the relationship as mutually destructive.
He asked Elena to admit that the public exposure had been cruel.
She did not answer.
The difference between the siblings became clear.
Celeste named her choices.
Nolan still negotiated responsibility.
Elena stopped carrying either of them.
She returned her engagement ring through his attorney.
She kept the pendant from her mother.
Its meaning had changed.
It was no longer merely the device that captured Nolan’s confession.

Employee ownership grew.
The shell companies were dissolved.
Stolen funds were recovered and redistributed.
Elena accepted one temporary advisory role.
