Chapter 5 - The First Bruise
The first bruise appeared four months before the wedding.
Elena had printed the shell-company records and placed them on Nolan’s desk.
“Explain these.”
He did not look at them.
“This again?”
“Celeste approved payments to companies she secretly owns.”
“You hired investigators?”
“I searched public filings.”
Nolan stood.
“You are spying on my family.”
“I am protecting investors.”
“You mean your father.”
“I mean everyone whose money is inside Mercer Holdings.”
Nolan walked around the desk and closed the office door.
The movement was quiet.
Deliberate.
Elena felt the change in the room.
“Open it,” she said.
“Promise you’ll stop.”
“No.”
He grabbed her wrist.
Hard.
Elena stared at his hand.
“Nolan.”
“Delete the files.”
“Let go.”
He tightened his grip until she cried out.
Then he released her.
A dark red band remained around her skin.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Nolan looked horrified.
He apologized immediately.
He said panic had taken over.
He blamed Celeste.
The company.
The wedding.
Daniel’s constant judgment.
“I’m not like this,” he whispered.
Elena wanted to believe him.
He brought ice for her wrist.
Held her.
Cried.
The following morning, Celeste arrived.
She noticed the bruise.
“Nolan told me you became hysterical.”
“He grabbed me.”
“He stopped you from destroying the company over accounting questions.”
Elena looked at her.
“You think that is acceptable?”
“I think marriages involve private moments outsiders would misunderstand.”
“What outsiders?”
“Your father.”
There it was.
The warning.
If Elena told Daniel, the wedding might end.
Nolan might lose the company.
Everyone would believe Daniel had been right.
Elena covered the bruise with a bracelet.
She told herself it had happened once.
It would not happen again.
But Nolan learned something from her silence.
Apologies worked.
