Chapter 4 - Celeste’s Version of Family

Celeste Mercer served as chief financial officer of the family company.
Publicly, she was polished, disciplined and protective of her younger brother.
Privately, she believed Mercer Holdings belonged to the two of them alone.
She resented every lender, director and investor who had gained influence during the company’s financial crisis.
She especially resented Elena.
“She walks into our hotels and speaks like she built them,” Celeste said.
“She saved the Grand,” Nolan replied.
“With her father’s money.”
“With her plan.”
Celeste stared at him.
“You are beginning to sound grateful.”
The accusation affected him.
Nolan wanted to believe he had rebuilt the company through brilliance.
Elena’s contribution complicated that story.
Vale Capital’s money made it worse.
So Nolan began removing Elena from the official history.
Her design recommendations were presented under his name.
Her meetings disappeared from corporate records.
Employees were instructed to direct all questions through Celeste.
When Elena objected, Nolan told her the company needed one clear public leader.
At home, Celeste behaved like an owner.
She entered without notice.
Changed wedding plans.
Replaced vendors Elena had selected.
She also began moving money.
Small consulting invoices went to companies with respectable names.
Strategic Arc.
North Mercer Development.
Silver Hall Advisory.
All three were controlled by Celeste through hidden ownership structures.
The payments began at fifty thousand dollars.
Then two hundred thousand.
Then millions.
Some money funded private investments.
Some covered old Mercer family debts.
A portion paid for Nolan’s extravagant wedding celebration.
The ceremony intended to present the Mercers as a restored dynasty was being financed through fraudulent invoices.
Elena noticed inconsistencies while reviewing hotel-renovation expenses.
When she questioned Celeste, Nolan became defensive.
“You are looking for reasons to distrust my family.”
“I’m looking at duplicate invoices.”
“Celeste understands the books better than you.”
“She approved payments to companies without employees.”
Nolan moved closer.
“Stop.”
It was the first time his voice frightened her.
Elena stopped speaking.

But she did not stop looking.
👉 The shell invoices led Elena to a hidden company, and its beneficiary was the same woman standing beside Nolan at every wedding-planning meeting.
