Chapter 6 - The Pendant
Daniel gave Elena the pendant six weeks before the wedding.
It was a small diamond set inside a silver frame.
Elegant.
Simple.
Unusual for a family known for extravagant jewelry.
“It belonged to your mother,” Daniel said.
Elena touched it carefully.
“I’ve never seen it.”
“She asked me to give it to you when you were making a decision no one else could make for you.”
Elena smiled sadly.
“That sounds like her.”
The pendant contained something Daniel did not initially explain.
After noticing Elena repeatedly covering her wrists, he had quietly asked the family attorney to prepare a safety device.
The pendant could record audio when pressed twice.
A third touch would upload the file to an encrypted account controlled only by Elena.
Daniel did not activate it for her.
He did not monitor it.
He handed Elena written instructions and said, “Use it or don’t. The choice is yours.”
She became angry.
“You think Nolan is dangerous.”
“I think you are afraid.”
“I’m stressed.”
“Then throw the instructions away.”
Daniel did not argue.
He left.
Elena almost returned the pendant.
Instead, she wore it.
Three nights later, Nolan cornered her inside the Mercer Grand’s private office.
He demanded access to the Vale Capital agreements.
Elena refused.
He blocked the door and gripped both of her wrists.
The pendant recorded his voice.
“You’ll be my wife in six weeks. Stop acting like your family’s money matters more than mine.”
“My family’s money saved yours.”
The slap came so quickly she did not see his hand move.
Elena struck the wall.
Nolan froze.
Then he said the sentence that ended the last of her denial.
“Look what you made me do.”
Elena touched the pendant after he left.
The recording uploaded.
She listened once.
Then sent it to the Vale attorney.
Not to Daniel.
Not yet.
She asked for confidential help.
The attorney arranged a medical examination and began preserving evidence.
He also discovered the misconduct clause could be activated only with proof that Nolan’s behavior affected Mercer Holdings or its protected investors.
Abuse alone would support criminal and family-law action.
Fraud connected to the abuse would remove Nolan from the company.
