Chapter 15 - Celeste Took the Stand
Celeste accepted a cooperation agreement after forensic investigators recovered every shell-company transfer.
She still faced prison.
But prosecutors considered a reduced sentence if she testified fully.
Nolan stared at his sister as she entered the witness box.
Celeste did not look at him.
She admitted creating Silver Hall Advisory.
She admitted directing false invoices.
She admitted helping prepare the medical narrative.
Then the prosecutor asked about the proposal.
“Did Mr. Mercer love Elena Vale?”
Celeste hesitated.
“In his way.”
“What does that mean?”
“He wanted her. He also wanted what marriage to her could do.”
“Was the engagement part of a financial strategy?”
“Yes.”
Nolan’s attorney objected.
The judge allowed the answer.
Celeste explained that Mercer Holdings needed Vale financing to survive.
Nolan feared permanent dependence.
Marriage appeared to provide a path toward Elena’s trust and influence over Vale Capital.
“He said once Elena became a Mercer, her father would stop treating us like borrowers.”
“Did Elena know?”
“No.”
“Did Nolan ever consider abandoning the plan?”
Celeste’s eyes filled.
“Sometimes.”
“When?”
“After he proposed. He told me he wanted the marriage to be real.”
“What changed?”
“Elena kept asking questions about the invoices.”
The truth was brutal.
Nolan’s affection survived only while Elena remained useful and obedient.
When she challenged the fraud, he chose control.
Celeste admitted helping conceal injuries because canceling the wedding would expose the company plan.
She also admitted hearing Nolan threaten Elena before the bridal suite assault.
“Why did you help him?”
Celeste looked toward the Mercer family members seated behind her.
“Because we were raised to believe the company mattered more than anyone inside it.”
That explanation did not excuse her.
But it exposed the culture surrounding them.
Nolan had not acted alone.
He had acted inside a family system that called secrecy loyalty and control protection.
Celeste pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, evidence fabrication and assisting coercion.
Her testimony destroyed Nolan’s remaining defense.
The jury deliberated for one day.
Nolan was convicted of assault, coercion, wire fraud, identity misuse and conspiracy.
The verdict ended the criminal trial.
