Chapter 1 - Let the Ceremony Begin
“Just teaching her a lesson.”
Nolan Mercer whispered the words beside Elena’s ear with a smile meant for the wedding guests.
From a distance, they looked like an affectionate couple sharing one final private moment before the ceremony.
Up close, Elena could smell whiskey on his breath.
Her makeup did not completely hide the purple bruise beneath her eye. A small cut marked the corner of her mouth. Beneath the lace sleeves of her wedding gown, finger-shaped bruises circled both wrists.
Her father noticed.
Daniel Vale stopped several steps away.
The joy vanished from his face as his gaze moved from Elena’s injured mouth to Nolan’s hand tightening around her arm.
Around them, hundreds of investors, executives and society guests waited beneath crystal chandeliers.
Nolan leaned closer.
“Smile. You’ve already caused enough trouble.”
Elena’s body trembled.
But she did not lower her head.
She slowly removed her veil.
The bruises became impossible to miss.
Daniel took one step forward.
“Elena?”
She looked directly at him.
“Let the ceremony begin.”
Nolan relaxed.
He believed she had surrendered.
Elena tightened her grip around the bouquet and touched the pendant at her throat.
Her father’s phone vibrated.
A new folder appeared on the screen.
HIDDEN MICROPHONE UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Inside were recordings, shell-company invoices and a copy of Mercer Holdings’ misconduct clause.
Nolan glanced at the display.
His smile faltered.
“You finally made enough mistakes,” Elena said.
The ballroom doors opened.
The Vale family attorney entered with two financial investigators carrying tablets and sealed legal envelopes.
“Stop the ceremony.”
The musicians fell silent.
Then Nolan’s voice filled the ballroom through the sound system.
“I was just teaching her a lesson.”
Every guest turned toward him.
Celeste, Nolan’s sister and Mercer Holdings’ chief financial officer, went pale.
Nolan stared at the pendant around Elena’s neck.
He finally understood.
It had recorded everything.
Daniel stepped between his daughter and the man wearing the groom’s tuxedo.
“This wedding is over.”
The attorney opened the first file.
It contained evidence of abuse.
The second contained proof of fraud.
