Chapter 9 - THE LOCKED STUDY
Detective Morales obtained a full search warrant the following morning.
Daniel’s study contained more than financial records.
It contained a second life designed for Evelyn.
A calendar listed fictional breakdowns.
April 8—confusion after dinner.
April 21—threatened to leave without shoes.
May 3—violent response to Vanessa’s name.
None of the events had happened.
Daniel and Vanessa had created messages discussing Evelyn as though she were a patient.
Vanessa: She needs another public episode.
Daniel: Her father will interfere if she contacts him.
Vanessa: Then make the father part of the delusion.
A video folder held recordings from hidden cameras throughout the house.
Daniel had saved moments when Evelyn cried, raised her voice or drank wine.
He removed everything preceding those moments.
One clip showed Evelyn throwing a glass.
The complete recording showed Daniel had just told her that Richard was dying and refusing to see her.
Richard had been perfectly healthy.
Another clip showed Evelyn pounding on a locked bedroom door.
Daniel labeled it:
AGGRESSIVE EPISODE.
The full security log showed he had locked her inside for six hours.
Officers also recovered dozens of unsigned letters addressed to friends Evelyn had stopped seeing.
Each letter, written in Daniel’s voice but signed with Evelyn’s name, claimed she needed distance because of emotional instability.
He had not merely discouraged relationships.
He had answered people on her behalf.
Nora found a draft resignation from Bennett Technologies.
It stated Evelyn was stepping down due to mental-health concerns.
The signature had been copied from a birthday card.
Most disturbing was a medical file signed by Dr. Gregory Lane, a private psychiatrist Vanessa had hired as a consultant.
The evaluation declared Evelyn incapable of managing complex assets.
Dr. Lane had never examined her.
He claimed Daniel provided sufficient behavioral documentation.
The report was dated two days before the assault.
Daniel planned to file the guardianship petition Monday morning.
The dinner was his final attempt to obtain a voluntary signature.
If violence succeeded, he would submit the transfer.
If Evelyn resisted, he would call the police and present her as unstable.
The broken wineglass had been intended as proof.
