Chapter 1 - NO MORE
“You’re useless without me.”
Daniel stood beneath the cold crystal chandelier, gripping a leather belt in one raised hand.
Evelyn sat on the marble floor beside the glass coffee table. Her pale floral dress had twisted around her knees. Her hair covered one eye, and a bruise was already darkening across her cheek.
On the white sofa behind Daniel, Vanessa lifted her wineglass and smiled.
“Call your father now,” she mocked. “Let him hear what his precious daughter became.”
Evelyn had not spoken to her father in nearly two years.
Daniel had made sure of that.
He told her Richard Bennett despised their marriage because he could not control her anymore. He said every warning her father gave was proof of jealousy.
For too long, Evelyn believed him.
Her phone lay beneath the edge of the glass table.
As Daniel turned toward Vanessa, Evelyn slowly reached beneath her skirt and pulled the phone against her body.
She pressed her father’s name.
He answered before the first ring finished.
Evelyn could barely breathe.
“Dad…”
Daniel looked back.
Evelyn forced the words through trembling lips.
“You were right.”
Richard did not ask what she meant.
He already knew the sentence.
It was the emergency phrase they had chosen during the one secret meeting Evelyn permitted six weeks earlier.
“Stay where you are,” he said. “The back door is opening now.”
Daniel moved toward her.
“What did you do?”
The rear door swung inward.
Attorney Nora Ellis entered first, holding a phone that was already recording. Trauma nurse Olivia Reed followed with a medical bag.
“We move now,” Nora said.
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
Olivia knelt beside Evelyn while Nora placed herself between Daniel and the women.
“Do not touch her again.”
Daniel lowered the belt.
“This is my house.”
“No,” Nora replied. “The deed says it belongs to Evelyn’s trust.”
Headlights flooded the front windows.
Three police vehicles stopped in the driveway.
A black sedan pulled in behind them.
Richard stepped out carrying a thick evidence folder.
Daniel stared through the glass.
The man he had spent years teaching Evelyn to fear had not come to control her.
He had come because she finally asked to be protected.
Evelyn slowly rose with Olivia supporting her.
Daniel reached toward her.
She stepped back.
“No more.”
Nora opened the folder Richard had delivered.
