Chapter 12 - VANESSA’S SECOND PLAN
Vanessa attempted to leave the country two days after Daniel’s arrest.
Federal agents stopped her at the airport.
Her luggage contained cash, encrypted drives and a passport in another name.
Inside one drive were recordings of Daniel.
She had secretly recorded every discussion about Evelyn.
In one conversation, Daniel said:
“She’ll sign after she understands no one is coming.”
Vanessa replied:
“And if her father comes?”
“He won’t. She hates him now.”
Another recording captured Daniel describing the dinner plan.
“I scare her. You witness the breakdown. If she signs, we send the papers. If she doesn’t, we call Lane and the police.”
Vanessa’s attorney offered the recordings in exchange for leniency.
She claimed Daniel orchestrated everything.
Investigators then found her private messages to Halcyon.
Once Daniel secures the shares, remove him before closing. His fund is a liability.
Halcyon promised Vanessa a larger payment if she testified that Daniel acted alone.
She intended to take Evelyn’s company, abandon Daniel and disappear with the money.
Daniel believed Vanessa loved him.
Vanessa believed Daniel was useful.
Both had made the same mistake with Evelyn.
They interpreted kindness as weakness and isolation as permanent surrender.
Vanessa requested a meeting with Evelyn.
Nora advised against it.
Evelyn agreed to observe remotely while investigators questioned her.
Vanessa described Daniel as controlling and violent.
Some of it was true.
Then Detective Morales asked:
“Why did you tell Evelyn to call her father while Daniel stood over her with a belt?”
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
“I was trying to shock her into action.”
“You laughed.”
“I was nervous.”
“You placed tabs on the transfer agreement.”
“Daniel asked me to.”
“You hired Dr. Lane.”
“I believed Evelyn needed help.”
Morales played a recording from Vanessa’s own phone.
Her voice said:
Once she is declared incompetent, Richard cannot stop us in time.
Vanessa stopped performing innocence.
She asked for an attorney.
Her cooperation agreement collapsed.
Yet the drive contained one more file.
