Chapter 13 - THE FIRST DATE WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT
The email was written six years earlier.
Daniel sent Vanessa a list of potential investors connected to family-owned technology firms.
Evelyn Bennett’s name appeared at the top.
Majority trust beneficiary. Limited executive interest. Estranged tendencies with controlling father. High likelihood of delegating financial matters to spouse.
Evelyn stared at the description.
She had not been estranged from Richard then.
Daniel planned to create that distance.
Vanessa replied:
She attends the foundation auction next month. Approach through the scholarship program, not the company.
Daniel followed the instruction.
He had praised Evelyn’s community work because Vanessa’s research showed it mattered to her.
He had claimed to admire women who disliked public attention.
He had told her Richard seemed intimidating before meeting him.
Each “natural” connection had been prepared.
The emails did not prove Daniel felt nothing afterward.
Later messages showed genuine affection.
He complained that Vanessa treated Evelyn as an asset.
At one point, he considered abandoning the plan.
Daniel wrote:
She trusts me. I could build a real life with her.
Vanessa answered:
A real life does not erase your debts.
Daniel chose the plan.
Love may have entered the marriage.
It never became stronger than entitlement.
Evelyn left the evidence room and vomited in the hallway.
Richard found her sitting against the wall.
“You knew he investigated the company,” she said.
“I knew he researched the trust before proposing. I did not know Vanessa was involved.”
“Why didn’t you show me?”
“I tried.”
“You demanded a background check.”
“I approached you as a chairman protecting shares instead of a father protecting his daughter.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You made me feel like a company problem.”
“I know.”
Richard’s voice broke.
“When you stopped speaking to me, I told myself respecting your decision was the only way not to become what Daniel said I was.”
“You stayed away.”
“You asked me to.”
“I was being manipulated.”
“And I did not understand how deeply.”
Neither had a perfect defense.
Daniel created the separation.
But pride helped maintain it.
Evelyn reached for her father’s hand.
“We both lost years.”
Richard nodded.
