Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE BELT CAME OFF

The transfer agreement gave Daniel full voting authority over Evelyn’s shares.
It also released him from liability for transactions made during the marriage.
Evelyn read every page.
“You’re asking me to forgive crimes I haven’t discovered yet.”
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
“You’re being dramatic.”
“I’m not signing.”
Vanessa smiled across the table.
“Your father taught you to mistake stubbornness for intelligence.”
Evelyn stood.
“This dinner is over.”
Daniel blocked her path.
“Sit down.”
“No.”
He grabbed her arm.
Evelyn pulled away, knocking a wineglass from the table.
It shattered against the marble.
Daniel stared at the broken glass as though she had attacked him.
Then he struck her.
Evelyn fell against the sofa and slid to the floor.
For several seconds, the room became silent.
Vanessa did not rush to help.
She lifted her wineglass.
“Now perhaps she’ll listen.”
Daniel removed his belt.
Evelyn stared at the man she had spent years trying to calm.
The fear remained.
But beneath it was clarity.
This was not a misunderstanding.
Not stress.
Not a marriage that required more patience.
Daniel had brought another woman into their home to witness his control.
He wanted humiliation to complete what isolation had begun.
“You’re useless without me,” he said.
Vanessa laughed.
“Call your father now.”
Evelyn saw the phone beneath the table.
She reached it before Daniel noticed.
“Dad… you were right.”
The plan activated.
Nora and Olivia entered through the back door.
Richard arrived with police at the front.
Daniel was still holding the belt when officers entered.
He dropped it immediately.
“My wife is having an episode,” he said. “She attacked us.”
Vanessa pointed toward the broken glass.
“She has been unstable for months.”
Olivia photographed Evelyn’s injuries before anyone could change the story.
Nora retrieved the hidden phone.
It had recorded the entire dinner.
Daniel’s demand.
Vanessa’s laughter.
The strike.
The belt leaving his waist.
Every word had been uploaded automatically.
Detective Aaron Morales listened to the first thirty seconds.
Then he looked at Daniel.

“Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
👉 Daniel prepared to call Evelyn unstable, but the recording captured exactly who had planned the violence and why.
