Chapter 8 - THE WOMEN AT THE BACK DOOR
Olivia took Evelyn into the guest room while police secured the house.
She examined the bruise on Evelyn’s face, swelling near her shoulder and older marks along her ribs.
“You don’t have to minimize any of this,” Olivia said.
“I’m not.”
But Evelyn heard herself describing injuries as small.
The bruise was light.
The pain was manageable.
Daniel had only used the belt to frighten her.
Olivia wrote down the facts without adopting Evelyn’s softer language.
“He struck you.”
“Yes.”
“He raised an object as a threat.”
“Yes.”
“He prevented you from leaving.”
“Yes.”
“He had another person supporting the intimidation.”
Evelyn looked toward the hall.
“Yes.”
Nora entered carrying the unsigned transfer agreement.
“There are fingerprints from Daniel and Vanessa on every page.”
“Vanessa touched it?”
“She organized the tabs.”
The document was not prepared that afternoon.
It had been assembled carefully.
Red tabs marked every place Evelyn was expected to sign.
Another page authorized the sale of Bennett Technologies to Halcyon Capital.
Daniel had planned to send the signed documents before morning.
Nora made three calls.
The trust froze Evelyn’s voting authority temporarily—not to remove her control, but to prevent anyone from using forged papers while she recovered.
The company suspended Daniel’s access.
A judge issued an emergency order protecting the shares.
Meanwhile, officers arrested Daniel for domestic assault, unlawful restraint and intimidation.
Vanessa was not arrested immediately.
She claimed she had been a shocked guest.
The recording contradicted her.
Still, encouraging cruelty was not enough to prove she participated in the financial crimes.
Before leaving, Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
“You have no idea what you just destroyed.”
Richard entered the room.
He had waited until Olivia confirmed Evelyn wanted to see him.
He stopped several feet away.
“I’m here.”
Evelyn looked at the father she had avoided for nearly two years.
“I’m sorry.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not tonight.”
“I believed him over you.”
“You believed your husband. That is what marriage is supposed to make safe.”
Evelyn began crying.
Richard did not say he had warned her.
He did not touch her until she reached for him.
Then he held her carefully, avoiding every injury Olivia had documented.
Outside, police began searching Daniel’s study under a limited emergency warrant.

Inside a locked cabinet, they found pre-signed medical forms, surveillance photographs and a second phone registered under Vanessa’s name.
