Chapter 15 - DANIEL’S DEFENSE
Daniel pleaded not guilty.
His attorney called the assault a private marital dispute exaggerated by Richard Bennett to maintain control of the company.
He claimed Evelyn had invited Nora and Olivia to provoke Daniel.
He described the recording as entrapment.
He argued that the transfer agreement was a legitimate business document and the psychiatric evaluation was requested out of concern.
Then prosecutors played the full dinner audio.
Daniel demanding a signature.
Vanessa describing Evelyn as alone.
The strike.
The belt.
Evelyn’s call.
There was no question leading Daniel toward violence.
No request that he threaten her.
No staged argument.
Only refusal.
Olivia testified about Evelyn’s injuries and trauma responses.
The defense asked why Evelyn had remained in the marriage if she was truly afraid.
Olivia answered:
“Fear is one of the reasons people remain. Isolation, financial control and manufactured doubt make leaving more dangerous than staying appears.”
Nora testified about the forged documents and emergency share restrictions.
Richard testified last.
Daniel’s attorney accused him of hating his son-in-law from the beginning.
“I distrusted him,” Richard said.
“And when your daughter chose him, you punished her with silence.”
“I made mistakes.”
The admission weakened the defense.
Richard did not pretend to be a flawless father.
He explained that Daniel had used real family tension to create a complete separation.
Then the prosecutor displayed the email selecting Evelyn before the charity auction.
Daniel’s attorney objected.
The judge admitted it as evidence of motive.
Evelyn took the stand after lunch.
She described the gradual isolation.
The first bruise.
The locked doors.
The documents in Daniel’s office.
Then she looked directly at Daniel.
“You spent years telling me I was nothing without you.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“The truth is that your entire plan depended on me.”
She explained that Daniel needed her name, signature, shares and silence.
Without them, his investment fraud collapsed.
The defense asked whether Evelyn still suffered anxiety.
“Yes.”
“Difficulty sleeping?”
“Yes.”
“Periods of fear and confusion?”
“Fear is not confusion.”
Her voice remained steady.
