Chapter 10 - THE PSYCHIATRIC TRAP

Dr. Lane initially defended his evaluation.

He said remote assessments were common.

Nora asked whether he had spoken to Evelyn.

“No.”

Reviewed her medical records directly?

“No.”

Contacted her primary physician?

“No.”

“Then you evaluated a woman based entirely on statements from the husband seeking control of her assets.”

Dr. Lane stopped answering without an attorney.

Bank records showed Vanessa’s consulting company paid him $75,000.

A second payment of $200,000 was scheduled after the Halcyon sale.

The guardianship petition requested emergency authority over Evelyn’s finances, medical decisions and corporate voting rights.

Daniel would serve as guardian.

Vanessa would be appointed financial adviser.

Halcyon Capital had prepared acquisition documents assuming Daniel’s authority would be recognized.

The timing was aggressive.

The company vote was scheduled for Tuesday.

Daniel planned to file the guardianship request Monday.

A judge might issue temporary control before Evelyn received notice.

By the time Nora challenged it, Halcyon intended to claim the acquisition had already become binding.

Richard stared at the timeline.

“They were trying to create a legal fact faster than we could stop it.”

Nora nodded.

“They only needed confusion for forty-eight hours.”

Evelyn listened from the other side of the conference table.

She felt humiliated that strangers had discussed her mind as a business obstacle.

“I cried in my own house,” she said. “They turned it into a diagnosis.”

Olivia sat beside her.

“Emotional pain is not incapacity.”

“But people might have believed it.”

“Some would. That is why documentation matters.”

Evelyn completed an independent evaluation with a court-approved psychiatrist.

She was found fully competent.

She was also diagnosed with trauma symptoms related to coercive control.

The distinction mattered.

Daniel’s attorneys claimed the trauma proved he had been right about her instability.

The psychiatrist responded:

“Trauma caused by mistreatment does not grant the person causing it authority over the survivor.”

The emergency guardianship request was dismissed before Daniel could file it.

Dr. Lane lost his hospital privileges and faced a licensing investigation.

But the guardianship documents contained a reference to a $12 million consulting payment.

The money did not come from Bennett Technologies.

It came from a shell company Vanessa controlled.

👉 Vanessa had financed the false diagnosis, and investigators now needed to discover who had promised her twelve million dollars for Evelyn’s silence.
