Chapter 8 - The Morning Noah Said No

Travis placed a phone on the kitchen table.

The custody consultant waited on a video call.

Lena sat beside Noah.

Her hands would not stop moving.

Travis crouched in front of the boy.

“Tell the lady what we practiced.”

Noah looked at his mother.

She could not meet his eyes.

The consultant smiled from the screen.

“Does Daddy make you feel scared?”

Noah shook his head.

Travis’s smile tightened.

“Remember the yelling.”

“Daddy doesn’t yell at me.”

“Tell her about the dark room.”

“There is no dark room.”

Travis turned off the camera.

His voice became low.

“You are making Mommy’s life harder.”

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I want Daddy.”

Travis grabbed his arm.

Lena stood.

“Don’t touch him.”

Travis released Noah and turned toward her.

“Then you explain why the money is gone.”

“You took it.”

“Can you prove that?”

He opened a drawer and removed several bank forms bearing Lena’s signature.

“You go to prison. Aaron takes Noah. I walk away.”

Lena’s courage disappeared.

“Please give me more time.”

“The hearing is next week.”

Travis told Noah to repeat the statement.

The child refused again.

Then he ran from the kitchen.

He reached the living room and grabbed Lena’s old phone from beneath a stack of mail.

It had no service, but the home Wi-Fi still connected.

Noah pressed the picture of his father.

Aaron answered from a highway rest stop.

“Buddy?”

Noah whispered, “Travis wants me to say bad things.”

The call remained open.

Aaron signaled Derek through another phone.

Derek was already nearby.

He had been checking a construction property less than fifteen minutes away.

“I’m going,” Derek said.

Aaron turned his truck around.

Inside the house, Travis found Noah holding the phone.

He ripped it away.

The call screen disappeared, but the audio connection remained active in the background.

Travis did not notice.

He dragged Noah toward the kitchen.

Lena followed.

“Travis, stop.”

The boy kicked and screamed.

Travis looked toward the baseball bat leaning near the back door.

He had used it to threaten Noah before.

This time, his anger was stronger than his control.

He picked it up.

Aaron heard Lena scream through the phone.
