Chapter 10 - The Father Who Put His Hands Down
Aaron ran toward the house.
Travis stood behind the doorway with the bat.
Every part of Aaron wanted to drag him outside.
Then Noah called, “Daddy!”
Aaron stopped.
His son was watching.
So were the officers.
Aaron opened his hands and kept them visible.
“I’m here, buddy.”
Officer Camille Reed moved between Aaron and the door.
“Let us handle him.”
Travis shouted from inside.
“Aaron planned this! His brother trespassed!”
The camera continued recording.
Officer Reed ordered Travis to place the bat on the floor.
He refused.
Lena stood behind him.
“Please,” she whispered. “Put it down.”
“You caused this,” Travis hissed.
He reached toward her.
Two officers entered.
One pulled Lena aside.
The other repeated the command.
Travis finally released the bat.
The wooden barrel struck the floor.
He was handcuffed seconds later.
Aaron did not watch.
He went to Noah.
Derek transferred the child carefully into his father’s arms.
Noah pressed his face against Aaron’s neck.
“I didn’t tell the lie.”
Aaron’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“Travis said Mommy would go away.”
“None of this is your fault.”
Paramedics examined Noah on the porch.
They suspected a fracture in his forearm.
The bat had struck below the elbow when Noah raised his arm to protect himself.
There was no head injury.
Still, the child shook whenever someone approached from behind.
Lena tried to move toward him.
Noah clung more tightly to Aaron.
“Not Mommy.”
The words stopped her.
Officer Reed asked Lena to remain inside for questioning.
Derek handed police both phones.
The open call had captured Travis ordering Noah to lie.
It also captured the impact and Lena begging him to stop.
The doorbell footage showed what happened next.
Travis continued claiming Noah had fallen.
Then Officer Reed played the audio through a speaker.
His own voice filled the porch.
“If you won’t say it, I’ll teach you to listen.”
Travis stopped talking.
As the ambulance doors closed, Aaron sat beside Noah.
Derek followed in his car.
Lena remained on the porch while police searched the house.
Inside Travis’s desk, they found forged custody papers.
But the largest discovery came from a locked metal box in the garage.
It contained documents carrying Aaron’s signature.
