Chapter 4 - The Money Lena Couldn’t Explain

Before the separation, Aaron handled most family finances.

He owned a residential construction company with Derek.

Lena managed the household accounts and worked part-time from home.

After the divorce filing, she insisted that all communication go through attorneys.

Travis helped her organize the financial documents.

Then Aaron’s child-support payments began disappearing.

Lena accused him of missing three months.

Aaron produced bank records showing every transfer had been completed.

The money had entered an account bearing Lena’s name.

But Lena claimed she had never seen it.

Aaron’s attorney traced the account.

It had been opened online using Lena’s identification.

The phone number belonged to Travis.

When Aaron confronted her, Lena defended him.

“He was helping me create a separate account.”

“Then where is the money?”

“It paid household expenses.”

“Twenty-one thousand dollars?”

“Lawyers are expensive.”

Aaron requested complete records through the divorce court.

Travis became furious.

He told Lena that Aaron was trying to bankrupt her and take the house.

The house had originally belonged to Lena’s grandmother.

However, Aaron had paid the mortgage and renovation costs during the marriage.

Their settlement negotiations were complicated, but Aaron had never asked Lena to leave.

Travis told her otherwise.

He claimed Aaron planned to sell the house and use her financial mistakes to win custody.

Then he showed Lena several withdrawal forms containing her electronic signature.

The money had moved into accounts she had never authorized.

Travis told her she had approved the transfers while distracted.

Lena did not remember.

He warned that the court would believe she stole from Noah.

Because some of the missing money had come from a savings account created for their son.

“I can fix it,” Travis promised. “But you have to trust me.”

From that moment, Lena stopped challenging him.

Whenever Aaron asked questions, she repeated Travis’s answers.

Whenever Noah complained, she called it confusion.

Travis had created a cage from forged paperwork.

He told Lena that one wrong word would send her to prison.

Then he started using Noah’s college account to cover his gambling debts.

Only one person in the family still had access to the original statements.

Derek.
