Chapter 13 - The House Sale Noah Was Supposed to Approve
The house belonged to Lena.
Her grandmother left it to her before Noah was born.
However, the deed contained one unusual restriction.
If Lena sold the property while Noah was a minor, part of the proceeds had to be placed into a protected trust for him.
The restriction could be waived only with approval from Noah’s legal guardian and an independent court representative.
Travis wanted to sell the house to a development company.
The offer was $1.4 million.
He planned to use the money to repay gambling debts and leave the state.
But Aaron’s custody rights made the transaction difficult.
So Travis created the false report describing Aaron as unstable.
If Aaron lost legal custody, Lena would become the only parent authorized to approve Noah’s interest.
Then Travis planned to pressure her into transferring the proceeds into an account he controlled.
The documents in the garage included a purchase contract.
Closing was scheduled in three weeks.
The developer had already paid a large advance.
Most of it was gone.
Travis needed the custody report completed before anyone discovered the fraud.
That was why he forced Noah to speak on camera.
He wanted the child to say Aaron frightened him.
When Noah refused, Travis lost control.
The baseball bat had not been part of a sudden argument.
It was an instrument Travis had used repeatedly to train Noah through fear.
Police found dents in the bedroom wall at the height of a small child’s head.
They found a broken toy beneath Noah’s bed.
They found audio recordings where Travis rehearsed the false statements with him.
Lena listened to one.
“Who makes Mommy cry?” Travis asked.
“Daddy,” Noah repeated weakly.
“Who should go away?”
“Daddy.”
“Good boy.”
Lena covered her face.
She had heard Noah say those lines before.
She had chosen to believe they were genuine because the alternative demanded action she was afraid to take.
The prosecutor informed her that silence would no longer protect her from charges.
She could face child endangerment, obstruction, and participation in financial fraud.
Lena did not ask for immunity.
She asked whether telling the complete truth would help Noah.
“It will not undo what happened,” the prosecutor said. “But it can stop Travis from doing it again.”
Lena agreed to testify.
Then investigators discovered that Travis had purchased two plane tickets.
One for himself.
One for Noah.
